ARC Raiders Rust Belt Lore: The Region Where the First Wave Was Fought

The Rust Belt is the ruined surface region Raiders work in ARC Raiders. Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City and the Spaceport all sit inside it, and Speranza's water, power and salvage come out of it. In the story it is also a battlefield. Embark's official world overview says the First Wave of ARC was barely pushed back in the Rust Belt after a decade of fierce fighting, and only for a time.

This page covers what the official sources and the game's own text say about the region, then goes map by map. Where players have filled the gaps with guesses, the guess is marked as one.

Key takeaways

  • The official world overview sets ARC Raiders in 2180 and says the First Wave was held off in the Rust Belt after ten years of fighting.
  • ARC returned a few years after that victory, and the survivors retreated underground to Speranza, which became the base of the Raider resistance.
  • Quests on Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City and the Spaceport keep returning to First Wave sites, Exodus machinery and Speranza's own water and power.
  • Pendola Pass, added in the Frozen Trail update on October 8, 2026, lies beyond the peaks that surround the Rust Belt.

Why the Rust Belt matters: the decade of the First Wave

Embark's official world overview tells the history in a few lines. A global environmental collapse wiped out most of human society. Generations later, survivors were rebuilding on what habitable land was left when machines started falling from the sky. That was the First Wave. In the Rust Belt, people fought it for a decade and only just drove it back.

The win did not hold. The overview says ARC came back a few years later, as if for revenge, and forced the survivors off the surface into Speranza, an underground settlement that became the stronghold of the Raider resistance. Our timeline of ARC Raiders lore puts each of these events in order, and the ARC overview covers what is known about the machines themselves.

The people you trade with lived through it. In Straight Record, Celeste says her squad built an ARC trap out by the Dam during the First Wave, and in the quest after it she admits they lost a lot of people back then. Tian Wen's mother fought in the Raider resistance. The Rust Belt is their old battlefield, and the game treats it that way.

Where the Rust Belt starts and ends

Embark has never printed a border, so the best guide is the game's own wording. In Shani's Eyes in the Sky, she says she has picked out a few good spots around the Rust Belt, and the spots turn out to be high points on Dam Battlegrounds, the Spaceport and Buried City. Apollo, in a quest called Shoring Up Defenses, calls the wide-open coastline the only place left to spot new threats moving into the Rust Belt.

Mountains close it in. Embark's Frozen Trail preview places Pendola Pass beyond the peaks that surround the Rust Belt, and the Blue Gate's in-game description calls it a gateway into the mountain ranges.

The official site describes the setting as Italy's history blended with brutal space-travel infrastructure. You see both halves on every raid: piazzas, pharmacies and apartment blocks on one side, launch towers and snapped fuel lines on the other.

The three core maps of the Rust Belt

Three maps carry most of the region's story, and each one covers a different part of the past.

Dam Battlegrounds

The Alcantara Power Plant, nicknamed the Dam, was a rare lifeline for settlers in the age of Sunrise and then a battleground in the closing fights of the First Wave, according to its in-game Codex entry. It is where the war feels closest: Celeste's old EMP trap, a First Wave outpost dug out at Victory Ridge, Baron husks still standing where they fell. Read the full Dam Battlegrounds lore.

Buried City

A city from before the Collapse that sand dunes covered for years, now partly uncovered by wind. Its quests are about ordinary life: a pharmacist's home, a library, a family's last camp. The Codex says signs show its people called it Marano. More in our Buried City lore.

Spaceport

Acerra Spaceport is where the Exodus shuttles lifted off and left a struggling Earth behind. Its quests dig into what the launch crews left: Exodus-era decryptors that still work, staff locker rooms, and a reservoir under the launch grounds that Speranza now needs. More in our Spaceport lore.

Blue Gate, Stella Montis, Riven Tides and Pendola Pass

The other four maps sit at the edges, up in the mountains or out on the coast. Each one has its own page.

  • Blue Gate is described in game as a once steadfast symbol of connection that now opens onto dangerous mountain ranges, in a valley scarred by old and new fighting. Shani's later quests send Raiders into its tunnels after records tied to a group called MANTIKOR.
  • Stella Montis is a secluded research facility among snowy peaks, said in its description to have been the last bulwark of humanity's preservation. Quests there turn up androids that were test subjects and the transport schedules of key Exodus components.
  • Riven Tides, added in patch 1.26.0 in April 2026, is a twice-abandoned harbor resort. Apollo's quests there are about storm defenses, since the hurricanes were not kind to its seawalls either.
  • Pendola Pass lies past the peaks. Embark calls it an old Italian village and Exodus transport hub where one of the Emperors has fallen, and ARC answered by sending the Frigate. Celeste offers Raiders an Outpost on the surface for the trip.

Stories that run across the whole region

Some quest lines refuse to stay on one map, and they say a lot about how Speranza survives.

  • Speranza drinks Rust Belt water. Celeste traces bad water to an intake under the Dam's Red Lake Balcony in Water Troubles, and the trail later runs to a reservoir beneath the Spaceport and to saboteurs Shani wants found.
  • Speranza's power reaches the surface too. A flash flood knocks out its solar panels in Buried City in After Rain Comes, and at the Spaceport the engineer Celeste sends to fix the substations goes missing.
  • Shani believes the Barons did more damage than all the other machines combined during the First Wave, and in Dormant Barons she sends Raiders to open the husks they left behind.
  • Tian Wen's Back on Top marks sites for new outposts on the Dam, Blue Gate, the Spaceport and Buried City. Raiders are trying to hold ground Topside again.
  • Tian Wen also suspects the Surveyors are sending data back into orbit, maybe tied to the strange signal Raiders picked up.
  • The ground keeps moving. Shani wants LiDAR scanners to monitor tremors, and later quests worry about a whole sector collapsing and the ceiling coming down.

The Rust Belt after Frozen Trail

Frozen Trail 2.0 arrived on October 8, 2026, and its story points away from the Rust Belt. Embark's preview says Celeste and Shani triangulated the strange signal heard across Toledo to Pendola Pass, beyond the peaks.

The old maps still feel it. The update added the Frigate and Redirection map conditions, and the condition rotation on October 10 listed the ARC Frigate on the Dam, Buried City, the Spaceport and Blue Gate as well as Pendola Pass. One new quest warns that if the Frigates roam freely, they will hit Toledo sooner or later. Our Frozen Trail 2.0 breakdown covers the update in full.

Earlier updates left story marks of their own. The Shrouded Sky update in February 2026 brought the Hurricane condition along with First Wave Raider caches, stashes from the old resistance turned up by the storm.

Theory: is the Rust Belt near Naples? (theory)

This part is interpretation, not confirmed lore. Two of the region's names match real towns in southern Italy: Acerra and Marano di Napoli are both towns in the Metropolitan City of Naples. Speranza is also the Italian word for hope.

One reading is that the Rust Belt is a far-future version of the countryside around Naples, with the mountains beyond it standing in for the Apennines. Embark has only said that the setting blends Italy's history with space-travel infrastructure, so any real-world location is a guess. The theories page collects other open questions about the world.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Rust Belt in ARC Raiders?

It is the ruined surface region Raiders explore from Speranza. Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City and the Spaceport sit inside it, a coastline marks one edge and mountains close it in. Embark has not given it real-world borders, though the setting draws on Italy.

What happened in the Rust Belt during the First Wave?

According to the official world overview, people in the Rust Belt fought the first ARC invasion for a decade and barely drove it back. ARC returned a few years later, and the survivors retreated underground to Speranza.

Is Pendola Pass part of the Rust Belt?

No. Embark's Frozen Trail preview places Pendola Pass beyond the peaks that surround the Rust Belt. The Pendola Pass lore page covers the fallen Emperor and the Frigate.

Which ARC Raiders map has the most lore?

For history, start with Dam Battlegrounds. Its Codex entry and quests carry the most First Wave material, including Celeste's old trap and the outpost at Victory Ridge.
