Lance in ARC Raiders: The Android Medic With Missing Memories
Lance is Speranza's medic in ARC Raiders, and he's an android who can't remember who he was before he arrived. Embark's official introduction calls him one of the most talented medics Toledo has on offer, an eccentric, bubbly android who is always trying his best to fit in among the humans. It also makes a promise: the memories amnesia took from him won't stay gone forever.
Until they come back, Lance is a mystery with a bedside manner. He runs the clinic, sells the bandages, shields and augments, and gives quests that move between medical supply runs and a much bigger question about what he is and where he came from.
Key takeaways
- Lance is an android medic who runs a clinic in Speranza and has no memory of his life before he arrived.
- Embark says those memories won't stay gone forever, but nothing official has explained his origin yet.
- His quest In My Image sends Raiders to Stella Montis after a report of androids very much like him.
- Frozen Trail gives Lance no confirmed story role, so every origin story for him is still a theory.
What the game confirms about Lance
Strip away the speculation and this is the solid ground, drawn from Embark's character post and the in-game Codex.
- He's an android and one of Toledo's most talented medics, according to Embark.
- Amnesia took his memories of who he was before he arrived, and Embark says they won't stay gone forever.
- He runs a well-known medical clinic just off Speranza's Piazza. The Codex says the only thing he can't cure is the common cold, though nobody says that within his earshot.
- He works hard at fitting in. Embark's post lists singing off-pitch at midnight karaoke, shopping for the newest underground fashion and boxing in Speranza's fight ring.
Bedside manner: how Lance talks
Lance is theatrical, warm and a little vain, and his quest text shows all three. Doctor's Orders greets new Raiders with "Say, newbie: if you want me to treat you, you better prove that those precious limbs of yours are worth bandaging." In Medical Merchandise he confesses that he's crafty at weaving bandages from fabric, "but to my shame," he hasn't mastered weaving an x-ray machine. Prescriptions of the Past sends you to the Spaceport's medical area because he wants to become "the undeniable champion of this place."
The Codex fills in the rest. With patients he's a consummate professional, as focused wrapping bandages as he is picking out bullets with tweezers. Naming his clinic is another matter, and his composure falls apart fast. Lately he has been chasing a harmonious feng shui, hoping it will soothe patients while he digs shrapnel out of them, and so far the strategically placed throw pillows haven't helped. It fits Life of a Pharmacist, where he wants a makeover that won't look like "your raggedy Raider Dens."
There's a quieter note in A Reveal in Ruins. He had a big reveal planned for a new ESR analyzer, a blood-testing device, until it vanished. In his dialogue he mentions that he meant to test it on himself first.
The androids at Stella Montis
The biggest clue to Lance's past so far is In My Image. It opens with him treating one of the first Raiders to visit Stella Montis: "she said that she saw... others. Androids, very much like me." The quest sends you to find and search three of them. In the dialogue he wonders whether others like him would know his name, or understand him, and when you report back he says he'll need time to process the data.
Other traders' quests add pieces. Celeste's Someone Else's Shoes says the androids around Stella Montis were test subjects as much as assistants, and mentions encrypted research notes about something called Project Pathos. Tian Wen's Codex line says she has come across similar models before, though rarely, and none that spoke or carried themselves like Lance. Nothing here proves Lance came from Stella Montis. What it shows is that androids like him exist, and that some of the ones at Stella Montis were treated as test subjects.
Lance keeps sending Raiders back there for other reasons, too. On Deaf Ears chases rumors of advanced hearing aids developed at Stella Montis, because, as he puts it, every other Raider seems to have serious hearing damage, and On the Map follows their trail to the Spaceport.
Lance and Celeste
Lance looks out for Celeste. The Codex quotes him sharing a secret: she collects mugs, he has catalogued twenty-three so far, she prefers the silly printed ones, and he keeps a stash in the clinic for her particularly bad days. His quest Celeste's Childhood Drawings opens with "Say, pal, has Celeste seemed a bit down, to you?" and sends you to a hotel at Riven Tides to find something that might cheer her up. Celeste's page covers what the game says about her childhood.
Is Lance in Frozen Trail?
Not in any confirmed way. Embark's Frozen Trail preview, launch post and 2.0 patch notes don't mention Lance, and none of the Pendola Pass quests we could verify are his. His stock is on the traders page, and his amnesia is still the open question it was before the update.
Theories about where Lance came from (theory)
Everything in this section is community interpretation, not confirmed lore. The most common theory ties Lance to Stella Montis: an android built there, damaged and wiped, who wandered into Toledo. In My Image and Project Pathos are the clues players point to. Others think he dates from the Exodus era more broadly, or that his amnesia hides some link to ARC. The game supports none of these yet. Our Lance character analysis and the ARC Raiders theories page go through the arguments.
One more loose thread: a newer quest called Empathetic Prototypes has a speaker horrified that "kin" might be dangling in a shipment crate. It sounds like Lance, but the quest catalog doesn't name its giver, so treat that as a guess.
